Selfish Gesture

Guys what a great will power can't do is possible by sitting idle at home when you are jobless. As I had applied for an extension from IBM for my joining and my other interview dates are also not finalized, so basically I am jobless at present with no work to do..:P So after being fed up with a vellaholic life(yeah I came up with that word:) ) I thought of writing down something.
The character of 'Howard Roark' of 'The Fountain Head' was somewhere at the back of my mind and with that frame of mind set I saw the title track of 'Chak De' on T.V today. I just thought of SRK's character in that (when you are sitting idle, you tend to think over anything and everything:)..) and came up with my own point of view.

So I thought...'What the hell!!!'. When all the critics express their likes and dislikes over any possible thing then why should I leave any stones untouched and so here I go:

‘Chak De India’ presented Shahrukh Khan as an idealist Indian but was he able to keep up with it throughout the movie? I am sure everyone will say ‘Yes’ but I don’t feel so. Everyone asks WHY? Such a flawless performance is under scrutiny for no reason. A performance that bolstered the topic that has always been left out is being under scrutiny. This is only to make an issue out of nothing only to get fame.

Now let me tell you why I feel so. It is very hard to understand human psychology but whatever little I construe gives me an idea that whenever you try to show something or impart your image on others, it is being selfish. I never say that a vindictive attitude is a selfish one but yes trying to form or modify your image is being selfish. As long as you know you are right, you need not show it to others that what you did and why you did that so as to make them feel good about it.

Let me explain my point with an apt example. If I am a selfless individual, I would not care what others think about me. I will only do whatever vocation or avocation gives me happiness. I am happy in doing whatever I like and not in making others feel or believe in my notions. But if I try to form or modify my image in the world’s eyes than the only reason for this is that I want myself to be liked or I want others to feel good about me. This will make me feel good and is thus a selfish motive.

Now coming back to SRK’s role in ‘Chak De India’, it was a selfish motive in my opinion because whatever others feel or believe, if SRK had the belief in himself that what he had done was right and made him happy then there was no point proving his ideas and vindicating his notions to make others feel positive about him. If you do what makes you happy then there is no need to make your relative or your neighbors or the people in your colony feel good about it.

Wow! Sorabh Tandon writing! Now thats amazing :)

A very thoughtful piece you got there sir. I liked it.

Well I did not get your point entirely, bcuz when I was beginning to get it, the post kinda ended. Perhaps I would have loved more text there, cuz I was loving it!

Whatever I understood from this is, you're indicting SRK's Char in Chak De India as selfish and that he tried to enforce his false image upon others. Well I do agree, it's stupid to portray what you are not. But then whoever tries to do that, usually fails miserably. Because whatever and whoever you are is usually visible to ppl around you sooner or later.

And yes, I do think SRK's char was selfish in the aforementioned movie and that too because he wanted to do what he thought was right. For eg. He wanted to take the women's team to world cup while the Sports board did not want to do that but he still pushed for it, and hence it was his motive and hence selfish. Also at several points in the movie, he just believed his own beliefs careless of others. And that was selfish.

But then I don't see anything wrong with being selfish in him or any other person for that matter. Every great man, be it a sports player or an artist or an scientist has been selfish in his road to success. He/She has done and pursued what he/she wants to do and thinks is right while being careless of the world around him/her.

It's not a question whether a selfless or selfish person is bad. Because in literal sense, nobody is truly selfless. And those people who deem themselves to be selfless, perhaps they should start by donating their bank accounts and body organs to the developing countries..

Just a personal opinion that's all :)

Hi Saurabh,

Read your article. Its great but i would like to give my point of view as well. I wouldn't say it a selfish gesture coz be in that situation where everyone thinks you are useless creature, everyone criticising you, and when its the whole country you belong to, it becomes impossible as hell to live like this, coz human is a social animal, he needs appreciation, people to talk to, and if you think like this, people wont recognize it as attitude but arrogance. For thinking like this, you need to be at the top, then only will it be called as attitude.. whether you believe it or not, it has become essential for every being to prove themselve on earth, otherwise you are considered nothing, leave others, your family is the first one to criticise you for this which can break anyone's confidence! Many are living such a disgraced life and hence i would say, after going through all this and then coming up with a new idea and even winning people's heart.. only few can do this who have utmost faith in the.. So i wouldn't say it a selfish gesture but th neccessity to live in today's world gracefully! :)
Though, a nice attempt, you write nice!
